OS 10.4. I know it has worked in the past month. My user account ( first one set up on system) no longer has administrator privileges. I went to do daylight savings update last week, and reply back says must enter administrator name and password......... Stuck because I can not even do a archive and reinstall because you need admin to do anything...........

Even with an Admin account you'll still get prompted for your password when applying system updates, modifying system files etc..

When it prompts for your admin password did you try your own account name and password?

yes,

I enter my user name and password and it says must enter admin user name and password. There are no admin accounts anymore. My account seems to have lots that status ( mysteriously over the past month ) and there never were any others..............

Turn on your Mac

When you hear the Chime

PRESS AND HOLD THE APPLE KEY AND THE “S” LETTER

Until you see all the code

Type the following:

/sbin/mount -uw /

Hit the Enter key

Then type this;

rm /var/db/.applesetupdone

Hit the Enter key

Then type this;

reboot

Hit the Enter key

Your computer will restart and you can create a new user and password by going through the installation wizard.

Once logged into the new account you can give the old account admin privileges.

Will this work for Leopard?

By 'installation wizard' do you mean that I will have to reinstall the entire Mac OS or will I simply just be prompted to create a new user account?

If so, will I lose any data from the original accounts?

That will also work for 10.5.
It will keep the original account(s), and just create a new admin one.

Great, thanks! Turns out I have a problem with Active Directory (AD), or not a problem, but user rights are determined via AD which I am not currently familiar with. Somehow, AD has removed all admin rights and turned all accounts into Standard accounts.

Anything that I do as the newly created admin user (even as root) to change my other user account's options to allow that user to admin my Mac is reset as soon as I log back in as the other user.
