Adobe CS apps crash on launch

First thing to say is that I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with fonts (which is the usual explanation, judging by other posts).

Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign (CS1) were all working perfectly. Now none launch. InDesign puts up its splash panel and gets to 'Starting up Service Registry' before crashing. Photoshop and Illustrator don't put up a panel. All give similar log file errors.

This is all caused, I believe, by trying to set up an HP Designjet 30n. I tried to install the driver provided with the printer before later reading on the HP site that it is not required for Tiger. I tried to install the HP maintenance utility which also crashed during installation.

My main concern is to get CS working again, then to make the printer work. Having read posts on this and other sites, I have tried:
- Repairing permissions
- Created a new user and tried the apps from there
- disk fsck
- Clearing the user and system caches using Yasu
- Checked for bad fonts
- Checking for presence of the Times RO font that has caused problems with some HP drivers in MacOS.

None of this helped...

Other apps such as Word start OK but will not print to the Designjet.
The printer still works correctly from other (Windows) machines on the network.

I feel that if the printer worked, maybe the CS apps would start working, too. The printer is recognised as a Rendezvous/Bonjour printer but the proper driver is not selected (it was initially, now it isn't).

The obvious next step is to reinstall the apps but a) I'm not that confident it will cure the problem and b) the CDs are currently 100miles away.

Any ideas folks?

Thanks, Bob

OK, I fixed this myself. For the benefit of others, this is the solution:

CS Apps. For some bizarre reason, the apps can get confused about the time zone (I found this on the Adobe forums). It only applies to users in the UK timezone but it stops all the apps working! The solution is to reset the timezone (to where it already was).

The printer driver problem was cured by reinstalling it from the MacOSX CD. That makes the printer work but doesn't provide the calibration utility. I'll be onto HP about that but I don't hold out much hope.

If nothing else, I've learnt a lot about MacOSX today.

well done 'CJ MAC OSX IPOD' had similar problems with CS but it did boot it just said reinstall and we couldn't double click on pictures and they will come up we had to go file>open>find he selected file and open it that way (how annoying but we just installed the application.

Hmm... two years later and I'm having a similar issue with InDesign CS3 on my new MBP running Leopard. Tried the time zone thing (as well as a host of other "fixes" around CS3's questionable compatibility with Leopard) but to no avail...

Anyone else having similar problems or have any suggestions (other than "go away noob!"). ;-)

Thanks,

Pete
