Airport Extreme Annoyance

I recently purchased an Airport Extreme card for my 12" Powerbook. I have a PC also and it shares a cable internet connection through a D-Link 624+ wireless router. The PC is connected via ethernet and the Mac via wireless.

I use the Powerbook frequently through the day and tend to put in to sleep several times a day if I'm not going to be using it for a couple of hours. When I wake the PB I have to reconnect to the base station. Annoyingly the airport menu already has the wireless network I want selected although it is not connected. Clicking on the newtork several times usually deselects it and I can then select it again. But, sometimes I get the error saying that there is an error connecting. Once this happens my only option is to switch off the router and turn it on again. The PB will then connect to the network.

I have to go through this routine several times a day now and it's getting a little long in the tooth. Anyone any ideas.

I'll add that this happens only when the PB has been asleep and never happens when it's either turned on or restarted. TIA

I never shut off my iBook (g3 800 - regular airport) and upon waking from sleep, it reconnects to my airport express everytime. The present network has two other hard wired connections all on a d-link switch DES1005D connected to a speedtouch 4*port dsl router. The router is shared with a neighbor who also has two windows boxes connected.

Still, the express is on a spur, not directly connected to the other machines. I have had it connected to the router directly also, with the same result.

If you disconnect the windows box, does it reconnect?

I am having a similar problem with my brand new iBook (I am new to Mac's after 25 years with PC's, so please bear with me). I have a windows wireless network in my house (WEP 128bit encrypted) After a bit of difficulty in getting the iBook to accept the password, it is all connected and running properly. Every time my iBook goes to standby for more than about 4 hours, it loses the airport connection. When I try to reconnect it has also lost the password and I have to enter it about 4 or 5 times before it will accept it. I have ticked the keep in Keychain box. I now keep the 26 character hex key in an Appleworks document, so I don't have to go and look it up every time. This little feature is driving me up the wall on an otherwise excellent machine. Any help appreciated. Wilson

Try trashing the com.apple.airport.preferences.plist file in the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder. Also trash the com.apple.airport.plist file in the *user*/Library/Preferences folder. I had a similar problem on a Powerbook and it worked for me. The main thing is when you are trashing them, be connected wirelessly to the network. Trash them, then immediately turn off the airport on the ibook. Wait about 5 seconds then turn it back on. Connect to the network and it should be fine. Make sure you ask it to save the password in your keychain.
