Airport network not automatically connecting

I have an airport extreme network running. It requires log in with password. My G4 12inch laptop connects automatically now that the username and password have been stored. This used to be the case for my G5 but it no longer automatically connects when I boot the Mac up. I always have to click the airport icon top right and select the network. It's definitely stored the username/password as it never prompts me for them and connects no problem but why can't it connect automatically?

Can use AirPort Admin Utility to configure settings.

Yes it is, that's why I don't uderstand why it doesn't work automatically

did you try to setup a network location? What's the routers ip?
