Airport scanning - performance interrupt

I recently installed a VPN.

The performance through the VPN is badly affected by the Airport scanning regularly; often the VPN hangs.

I have deleted the unnecessary wireless networks listed in the Advanced button under Network Preferences. However, the problem persists.

Can you please advise how to either stop the scanning or stop it interfering with Internet connection?

Many thanks.

Which hardware are you using this on?
Which operating system version and build?
How is the performance badly affected? How do you figure the AirPort is scanning when VPN hangs? (10.5's AirPort menu scans as soon as you look it up, for example.) You can't turn AirPort scanning off completely AFAIK, but it shouldn't affect network performance.

I am using an iMac, 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
MAC OS X 10.5.5

What I mean is that the signal seems to drop; this is mostly when I am using my VPN but it is not limited to when I am using the VPN. I have noticed that the 'link' or signal as I call it sometimes is simply not there - i.e. nothing happens when I click on a web page or whatever.

I follow what you say that the scanning starts each time I click on the icon; so I shall stop that; thanks.

My iMac is approx. 15 feet in a straight line from the Airport Extreme base unit; but it is located on the other side of a not thin wall (i.e. in another bedroom). Could the distance from the base unit be the problem? Could it be the incoming 'signal' strength form my ISP ..., in other words the ISP download speed maybe to light? I tested that and it is usually between 300kbps to 700kbps. Is there any way that it can be because of poor electricity supply? Not sure how to test that.

Thanks for your help.
