Airport signal much higher on iBook than PBook

My wife has a 12" AluBook (with Airport Extreme card) and I have a 12" iBook G3 (with Airport non-extreme). Both running 10.3.2 and Airport 3.3. Our base station is a Netgear 802.11-g box of some very recent vintage.

Testing signal strength with MacStumbler, I get about 110 and she gets somewhere in the 60s. I can roam to the extremes of the house and it only drops to maybe 70 or so - hers drops to the 20's.

Is 802.11-g just not as powerful as -b, not as good as getting through the walls and such? Seems like I have heard something about this.

Yup, this is known. The case of the iBooks does not isolate the signal as much as the metal cases do (alubook and tibook). It doesn't matter if you have an extreme or regular airport card.
