Alias's Created, Lost Originals

I have a MacG4 tower. I was cleaning my desktop. I made a new folder and was going to drag everything into it. I selected everything, deselected the HD, my external storage, etc, then dragged everything to the new folder and suddenly realised that everything was gone and only the alias's were left. I was careful before I dumped the trash, I've searched for the originals - when the search finds the alias, it wants me to connect to the original and says no original exists. I've searched, I've tried opening the alias's and they ask for the originals. I don't know what I did!! But several docs of all kinds are just GONE!!

Are there any suggestions other than buying retrieval software?
