Alt.Scanner Software for HP 1310 all-in-One

Hi
Does anyone know of any alternate scanner software that can be used with a HP 1310 All-in-One? The only thing available seems to be an upgraded version of Readiris(currently Pro 11) which originally came with this unit and it is kind of pricey. Is there any shareware/freeware that is stable and worth considering.

I am running OS 10.4.11 on a G4 450 Dual Processor desktop, in case this matters.

Thanks

For the printer or the scanner?

Printer: Gutenprint works very well and is free.

Scanner: VueScan is the best and is not expensive. Apple's Image Capture works well and is free....I think it's only available in Leopard, however.

Thanks for your reply to my query. The scanning function of the HP all-in-one printer is what I was asking about. Is VueScan shareware or available on a website? That sounds like it might work.

If you want a driver for your OfficeJet, then you can find it on HP's website. Readiris is not scanner software, it is OCR software. Its purpose is to convert a scanned image into editable text. It major competition is OmniPage Pro X for Macintosh. However, its small sibling, OmniPage SE, is bundled with many scanners. I'm betting that this or a similar title was bundled with your scanner and/or the downloadable driver. If my response did not answer your question, then you need to explain exactly what it is that you are trying to do.

Thanks for your response to my query. I noticed recently that although my scanner is working on my HP 1310, the scanned image only opens with OS 9, which I rarely use, so I was looking to upgrade the software to something that would open more universally on my computer(using 0S 10.4.11) and on computers running Windows as well.

I think that you may have answered the question but if my clarification changes anything or you can think of something that is relevant,I'd appreciate it.

Start with HP's newest drivers. If that doesn't please you, then give VueScan a try. It's $39.95 shareware available from Macupdate.com or Versiontracker.com. They update is almost weekly!
