Alternative Power Sources+?

Guys. My iBook was in for repair, and came back without a power adapter. :-(

There are no apple stores in my current area... Wilmington NC... so I'm with an iBook after a long time without... and no power...

SO SAD.

Can I plug my iPod adapter with firewire into iBOok to charge it?? No??

Can I some hwo fashion another power adapter out of rice and sticks? :(

They say it's gonna be a week until they can send me the adapter, cause they have to look for it first... ::sleepy::

Ring them and tell them it isn't acceptable. You paid for a service, and they have stopped you using your computer. You may get it quicker, and/or get a rebate/coupon.

No, do NOT try to charge the iBook through the FireWire port. That would be a big no-no.

I wouldn't give them a ring, I would march my happy butt down to the store and stand there until they handed me my power adaptor. I would also make it known that the level of service you got, even though the computer was apparently repaired, was unacceptable. How did you pay for the service? If with credit card or check, I would threaten (not an empty threat, either) to stop payment if the power adaptor was not in my hands in a reasonable amount of time, meaning by the time I'm ready to leave with it in my hands.

Good luck, and I think you're gonna be stuck until you get an Apple power supply specifically for the iBook!

I'll try calling again...

I can't go to the store cause I mailed it into Apple Support. The iBook was still on warrenty so I didn't pay a thing...

How should I call in and get angry though? Should I ask "Transfer me to someone who can take a complaint" or should I just chew out the hourly paid operator who answers my call?

I'm not good at this chewing people out stuff...

In that case, I would call back to support, and explain kindly to the tech what happened -- without getting angry and then ask to speak immediately with a supervisor. I would explain what happened to the supervisor, and ask for a replacement unit to be sent out immediately, since you have a non-functional computer on your hands. It's like if they shipped your desktop back to you without a power supply. Be persistent, firm, but kind.

The only reason I suggested that you get a little upset before is because I didn't understand that you had sent the machine to Apple! If it were some local shop and that had happened to me, that would be unacceptable and since my power adaptor had to be somewhere in their building, I wouldn't leave without them making a phenomenal effort to locate it. Losing a part is unacceptable, and showing that you're dissatisfied in person usually yields results.

On the phone, however, is very impersonal and the low-level techs that you speak to usually don't give two craps about your situation, and getting angry with them usually doesn't help -- but being persistent with a supervisor and explaining that you shipped them a unit and they sent it back in "as bad" or worse shape that you sent it to them in is plain unacceptable.

Firm, persistent, and level-headed. Losing temper on the phone won't get you anywhere, but offering them a solution like overnighting you a new power supply is not out of the question.

Good luck again!

The guidelines for the AppleCare repair service state that only the computer should be sent, and not the power adaptor unless it's for a replacement. So I'm afraid the error is on the customer's side here.

I suggest you to order a new power adaptor from the Apple web store and sell it when you've got your own back again. Won't be that much of a loss.

Actually the documentation I received with the box to ship my laptop in included a checklist to check which parts you were sending. Including a section for power adapters. Also the packaging had a picture displaying how to package the unit, and it specifically had instructions on where, and how, to package the power adapter. Apple Care had it in their computer that I shipped them the adapter as well.

I called back this morning and told the guy on the phone that I had a problem. They looked up my case, told me the techs couldn't find my adapter, and will be sending another one overnight mail. I'll have it tomorrow.

My iBook is a Japanese model, but I'm pretty sure that the power supplies are the same. Here's hoping.

Woohoo! Congrats! I'm pretty sure the adaptor's gonna be the same -- is Japan on 120v or 220v? The US model is 120v, so if that's the case in Japan, you're set!

Update on my life. The voltage in Japan is 100v, in the US it is 120v.

I called Apple Support and told them about this, but apparently the iBooks themselves are universal, however the power adapters are different. The guy assured me though that there would be no adverse affects if I used adapters around the world.

He did say though that they will also send a Japanese adapter since they should have noticed that...

However, the adapter didn't arrive today as promised! Tomorrow is Thanks, so I won't have them until Friday.. but I'll be out of town, so I can't pick it up until like... Monday :-( so long without an iBook is torture I tell you! Torture!

I had just bought 10.3 as well! I have hardly played with it yet! OHHHH the PAAAIN!!!
