AMD opteron, beats all CPUs in latest benchmarks!

ok, now im seeing why you guys are annoyed with him ;)

i wonder though, what this has to do with mac-land?

anyways i'll step out of the way as the flames come :p

*btw 64bit cpu's.. im not quite clear on their advantages? can someone splain?

If we ignore him will he go away?

Apparently eweek is the only mag on his level.
Try /. BTW... this didn't even make the page. The PPC 970 did though :D
An Opteron running at 2GHz with PC2700 DDR SDRAM achieved an unofficial score of 1,202 on SPECint
Hmmm.... not to much higher than our own IBM 970's SPEC score of 1051
Also remember. SPEC scores are HIGHLY manipulative. They're dependent upon both the compiler and the OS.

AMD's unofficial score for Opteron on SPECfp was also strong, achieving a result of 1,170, compared with 887 for the 2.8GHz Xeon, but well short of the 1,370 achieved by the 1GHz Itanium 2.
I, for one, do like good Floating point specs to. What about you?

Were'nt you just dogging on the Itanium a few days ago?

Originaly posted by SSManicDevlin:
Btw, Itanium sucks ass. When you consider a PC, you consider an AMD processor.

Yep you were. Thanks for the humor. I needed that
:p :p :p

excuse me for being stupid, but whats the itanium?

The Itanium is Intel's 64 bit processor that they've spent well over a billion dollars in research durring the past... oh, let's say 5 years. It's huge and you can cook supper on it whenever you're hungry but don't want to leave to go to the kitchen.

ouch

so tell me then, whats the advatage of 64bit, im not really up to date on what the big deal is

See?
It really didn't have anything to do with his GUI for XP, it's just everything else (like this) that we can't see a reason why he's here...
I'm just amazed that he hasn't been banned yet... :p

Altho... this is getting to be funny now... Kind of like a comedic jester - errr Troll - oh no, wait! Like our own
Microsoft Advertising Agency
. :D

he has been generally nicer than other trolls though, and im happy to see the current responses to him, with well put together researched ideas... instead of a 4 letter word sling fest ;)

anyways maybe i'll start putting my foot into my mouth here... :p

Truthfully, I'm not too sure how an x86 apple would fly. and apple wouldn't try to make that move for a very long time now.

Most macintosh users aren't worried about pure processing power. They buy the computers because of their fit and finish. Just like you said, OS X is great.
How fast does your computer have to be? Many people do nothing other than write papers and surf the net. You don't need the fastest processor on earth to do that.

My 400 G3 still plays the majority of the games that I want to play, at an acceptable level. Granted, they don't look anything like the dual 1.25's thats in the Powermac towers, but it's playable.

Why did you decide on the eMac instead of the Powermac? If performance is what you were looking for you could have purchased a dual 867 for around $1500, or the old single 867 for around $1200

Plus, these "all in one" macs are a pain to upgrade. It took me forever to upgrade the HD on an iMac DV here at school. With the G4, you just pull the tab at the side, and you are ready to upgrade.

I think I will also wait untill 2004 to buy a new Mac. Hopefully only a few people are thinking this way. hehe... if Apple doesnt sell any Macs before 2004, we are screwed.

I'm also in the wait-til-2004 boat, but then I'm not complaining since I've got a DP 1 Gig and a DP 867 to get me by for a while. Even when 2004 comes, I am not buying any marginally better box, it better knock my socks off. I'm sick of these teeny speed bumps. OS X set us back a notch in terms of interface speed, so we're back to playing catchup there again.

Actualy, I just built a 2.4 AMD machine for my family. I'm surrounded by PC's daily, and forced to work with them. I was originaly a PC user, I have since switched to the mac.

I am looking to purchase a new mac... just because mine IS showing it's age. Regardless of how it does it's job currently. The only reason that I haven't yet is the same reason you stated. Price. As soon a I do get the means to guy a new Mac I will. Until then I'm looking for a processor upgrade and a new video card.

As far as Apple running an x86 version of OS X, you are right. I know it is in development and on par with 10.2 for PPC. I guess I could see it released as a competition to other x86 OS's. Not as a replacement for the PPC

Life, the Universe, and everything:

Where'd the subject line go? ManicDevlin ... was banned once if I can homophone correctly. He's better behaved now it seems, but still incapable of determining what his purpose is here. Some seem to confuse aggrivation with attention.

64 bit computing is only advantageous for large memory access, which is becoming an issue even for personal computers. 32 bits can Byte address 4 G of RAM. We need to start adopting architectures bigger than that, as 1G of RAM is getting fairly common in the pro-sumer world. Other than that, they are wasted bits whcih generate more heat and no additional work. A necessary evil in modren computing.

My next computer will likely be an iBook. What I really benefit from is portability, reliability, a fast graphics processor, a stable and wonderful OS, and my lap not catching fire. Seriously, if I could get a powerbook with a G3 processor in it I would.

After getting a new palm pilot, a have reaffirmed to myself that good programming means 10X more than processing power in the vast majority of daily tasks. Anyone who says differently is either doing rendering, or has given up on good programming because they use M$ everything. I program, I can tell the difference. Even for large programming tasks I'll take a G3 ~750Mhz any day.
