Any equivalents to .mac?

I am looking at setting up a low maintenance and low cost site for my design business.

At this stage I am not ready to put the time and money into a dedicated site with my own domain. After I saw a portfolio of a rather good UK design firm which used a .mac gallery as part of its main site, I thought I might use .mac for my whole site and bypass the costs and restrictions of my own ISP.

However when I look at the real cost of .mac and consider the implications of being locked into it long term, I hesitated. It seems neat, but very expensive.

Are there lower costs alternatives that I can use iWeb to publish to, and do you have any experiences or advice to share over whether or not this is a good idea?

I personally wouldn't use iWeb to create a site, however I've been using HTML since the early 90s so I'm comfortable hand coding.

As far as hosting, for what you're wanting to do a normal ISP should fill the bill just fine.

I use ASO (A Small Orange) for all my stuff (since 2003) and I'm happy with them. Their smallest plan is $25 a year a might work for you. The next is $60/year ($5/mo), but you also get 2 free months if you prepay for 12. Full PHP, mySQL, unlimited domains (parked & addon), unlimited subdomains, unlimited ftp accounts, unlimited e-mail (POP/iMAP), SSH access, WebDav, Ruby, cPanel, Fantistico, etc.

iWeb should work fine with them, but you'll have to use FTP or drag & drop to publish the site (i.e. publish to a folder, the FTP the folder contents or drag & drop via webdav.)

Thanks I'll check out A Small Orange, they sound like a good deal.

Other than the USA domains they are offering, any drawbacks with my being in Australia and them being in the States?

And is 75 Mb big enough for a SOHO site with some portfolio material?
