any news group app multiple server combine to form more ocmplete group

ok, are there any news group applications that access news groups for binary files that work with multiple news group servers and downloads headers from all groups and combine them to form a more complete group? like if a file has 15 parts and 13 parts are on server 1 and server 2 has the rest. any apps that automatically combine like this.

if you wanna know what i am talking about go to www.newsbin.com for newsbin pro which does this, but only for pc.

i need an app for mac os 10 prefer, but if i must, will settle for os 9. so far no mac app that i have ever heard of will do what i need.
 
This is what newsbin.com front page says and is what I'm neeidng in a mac app for mac os 10 prefer, but 9 if i must, and i still have no clue of any app that does this for mac. none that i have heard of do it. newswatcher don't, thotht, yanw, newsflash etc. nothing that i know of. and if any dev people read this, please make a news app like newsbin pro. you'll corner the market for mac os 10 and it'll be the best app that does news group binary access.

It appears one just showed up on macupdate.com called baker for osx. It claims to do what you are looking for. it is shareware and costs $35 to register. Not sure how functional the demo is. let us know how it works if you give it a try.
 
i found baker. the web site talks like it does part of what i need, but does not specifically say it will combine headers parts etc to form a more complete group etc. I'll have to try it. However at versiontracker everyone hates it. cept one person and even that one didn't sound good. they all said it doesn't work. but at the least it's more what i need then any other app for os x. now only if he made the app in cocoa and some other stuff, but I'm sure it's only carbon, :(((( I HATE carbon.
 
Yeah, Baker SUCKS!!!! It literally does not work. Download headers from one group one server, got to 650k and stopped. Also the app is useless while it's downloading headers as the mouse turns into a clock thing. What a pice of crap. I'd like to email the programmer, but don't think it's worth it when I'd probably tell him off for making such a shit app. I mean it's totally useless and I can't imagine why in the world he/she even released it as it just flat out doesn't work.

So anyone know of anything else?

Usenet seems to me about as useful as AOL. I used Usenet apps in UNIX then on my System 7 Mac (NewsHopper) for a while, before realising that news reading is a nightmare on a number of counts:

- Mac software like NewsHopper -- which offers rare features like "off-line" news reading -- are few and far between. NewsHopper also isn't properly threaded, and the author stopped updating the software when he got ME, poor guy. So cue the original license fee of £40 going down the drain...

- Micro$oft's Outlook Express is crap on the Mac compared with the PC version (which itself is pretty cack, but DOES do off-line reading).

- Ditto the news reader in Netscape's package

- Agar's Hogwash (another off-line capable newsreader) does the job quite nicely, but it also costs. And I've already been bitten :) In fact, re cheap software, I've been bitten TWICE! Does anyone remember "Anarchie," which became Interarchy? **

- Anything you find on Usenet you invariably also find on a website.

- Usenet is just another way for spammers to pick up email addresses

- You can get porn everywhere now I believe ;)

OK, so just my four penneth. Now read the woeful Interarchy tale. I think I'll write my own software from now...

** OK, so I should expand on this... I paid a fee for Anarchie. And then the software prompted to me to download Interarchy. So I did. Figured I'd try it. I liked it. BUT You have to pay again (albeit at a slight discount).

Well, I paid AGAIN, and used Interarchy quite happily for a while. It's well-written, useful software. Then one day it prompted me to download the next version (version 5), and I did.

Silly arse. Had I learned nothing?? Well, in my defence, the new version offered nothing particularly "earth-shattering," just a few bug fixes and carbonisation. Also, the downloader mentioned NOTHING about extra license fees.

"Useful for when I get OS X" I thought, and downloaded it. Well, I used this new Interarchy quite happily at the same session. Nice software. Stable. Looked OK too. Cool.

But then I made the mistake of quitting and restarting my Mac.

When I went to load up Interarchy for use # 2, I discovered it was disabled until I entered ANOTHER software key which I had to pay for. Well, that was the last stroke. I wasn't THAT desparate for the new features. Jeez, this is as bad as buying MS Office! Interarchy offered me no way of reverting to version 4, which I'd paid for and was happy with. Nor did Stairways Software respond to several (civil) email enquiries. So, I have junked it. Sad.

A lesson learned. Don't pay for software unless it's from big outfits!! (OK, so I'm joking).

Asar, whick is really Kurt Spaker, is a great program for usenet. It doesn't quite do all that buggs1a wants it to do, but it comes close. I have been a registered user since it was first released and have never had to pay for any of the numerous upgrades. However, an osx version has yet to be released. My last correspondence with kurt addressed this and he assured me one was on the way but that he has had a terrible time making the conversion. I suspect he is waiting for apple to slow down their updates - to get the system he must match working right first at this point. On the other hand Hogwasher runs just as well if not better in classic as it does in 9.2.1. In fact I am so happy with this product that I have actually encouraged Kurt to charge a small amount for the osx upgrade when it comes out as i feel he deserves it with all the great work he has put into it previously.

As for benpoole's rant against usenet, I can only say that once i started using hogwasher i practicaly quit surfing the net. Usenet will provide more of anything you are looking for and do it faster. You can read it anytime after that. No wasted time and no having to sit at the computer for hours. If more people understood usenet, the www would have to become more user friendly and less user abusive. (who wants to deal with pop up windows all the time?):cool:
 
I think usenet rocks. It's easy to find what you need, well, somewhat. the same files are at least for me next to impossible to find online web site. web sites would get shut down. No, it's not a pic I'm after, lol. Just like to use the news groups to download games or stuff for the pc and try them out. then if i like them enough i buy them. i use windows exclusivly for the news. newsbin pro www.newsbin.com does an awesome job. nothing like it on mac. :(((

Now, if someone out there was willing to with my help make a usenet reader on mac os x that worked and did like newsbin pro does, www.newsbin.com I'd be glad to help and it's my opinion that the app we could make together would corner the market and be the best available. So if anyone is willing to with my help try, please email me buggs1a@hotmail.com and we can talk. I'm totally seriouse. Or we could use news flash as it's open source for os x and we could add to that and change it around, also it's cocoa. :)

But as buggs1a days, Usenet would become a hell of a lot more useful if you could trawl multiple servers to ensure you get the full thread of something.

The fact that I had to rely on various UK-based ISPs' news feeds to get the information I wanted is why I stopped using Usenet. I just lot out too many times on information I wanted to get.

A shame, because back in 1992, Usenet was all I used!

Hopefully with OS X, the Mac platform will finally get the Usenet software it deserves, but I can't help but feel there's not going to be the impetus behind developing something really good, given the history of news sofwtare on the Mac / Usenet's "decline" in the face of the web generally.

if the server allows multiple connections to it then you'll get good speed as long as the server is fast. and the software supports multiple connections.
i use @home and their news server plus 2 other nsp's. i max out my bandwidth almost. i get 250k/sec-375k/sec when i download from the news using all the servers. newsbin pro in windows works awesome. its set for 8 connections and rocks. however the author hates the mac and won't touch it. he says he hates windows but makes it for the pc. he loves linux and is making it for linux, however isn't open sourcing it. he says linus is the future. lololol.

also i dont think anyone is willing to make a good usenet app for the mac. but if someone is willing to, i'd love to help them. and i know it'd be the best nntp app in the world.
 
If you've got the patience, a reasonably fat pipe and a lot of disk space, you could always set up Leafnode (a fairly easy to set up UNIX news server) and let it pull news from multiple servers. As an advantage, you can set your own article retention times per group. Then you can run any old newsreading software and use localhost as your news server.
 
I only have a 30gb drive and it's full right now. but when i delete stuff it'd be 20gb free or so. leafnode is command line right? if so then i wouldn't want to touch it. it is my goal never to use command line for anything ever. i personally hate cli. command line itnerface. if you uncompress it like it's a dmg or whatever and run a gui installer and set it up that way I'd use it, but so far as i know there's not one news server app that is a gui for mac os x. i would only use it though if i could see a list of all groups headers and select, like from a client app. cus i don't think it's good to donwload an entire group when i check 5-7 groups or so and they are all binary. this would use up over 50gb im sure every couple days. also sometimes i don't check news daily. but there is dnews and you can use it in os x as suck feed.

i guess the only way i would use a news server is if i had a couple 100gb drives and was able to on my own time check the news daily, but i don't think that's likely. plus my nsp's wouldn't like me to download an entire group, 5 or so groups daily. that would eat up over 100gb easy i bet for a week. what i do is check a news site that says what is posted, when and where and if i see a game i wanna try or a movie to check out, I'll download only that title. a news server won't do anything like this would it? cus it downloads everything right? i just can't afford to take any chances with my @home isp, newzpig and another news server.

I do have the pipe though at 2-5mb/sec or so which is ok.

so is there a server like that might fit my needs? leafnode do it? pretty much i need ot be able to select what files i want, not entire group. and i don't think servers do that, :( if i knew for sure i could download all 5-7 groups, entire group and i had enough drive space for say 3 days retention, then I'd consider it.

Well, I certainly understand this point-of-view as a philosophical/aesthetic choice on your part. I have moderate/high experience with command-line UNIX solutions, so I had no objection to installing leafnode for my own use. The sad fact is that for a problem like the one you're describing, the tools already exist (and are well tested and free) in the cli environment. Of course, once leafnode is installed, there is a web-based interface (called leafwa) so that you can do all of the administration from your browser. As far as I know, though, there are no one-button installers for leafnode yet, as it requires a few steps (creating a user called "news" on your system, for example) that would be pretty tough to automate cleanly and securely.

I think Communigate Pro has one, but that's far from free. It wasn't an option in my case.

I don't think leafnode can do this. Since you can customize expiration times per group, what I do is set low-volume text groups (like the mozilla discussion groups, for instance) to really high retention times (30 days) while binary groups get short retention times (2-3 days.)
 
yeah, i need to select what to download cus i don't and will not for years have enough hard drive to download an entire news group full of 15mb binaries that on a daily basis would fill up 50 plus gb easy.
that's why there needs to be someone out there willing to with my help make an nntp client. or use an open source one like news flash and add to it. so people please, lets make something good.
