Solaris!

How can you get all that for under £5000?
I tried to put togeather a machine with 2x250 and the top 9800 radeon card.

G5 with 2Gb Ram
2x250 HD
Radeon 9800 Pro 128 Mb Ram
No modem
No bluetooth
No Airport
No extras at all!

51,160,00 SEK(Swedish Kronas)!
39,765,00 SEK with 512 MB Ram!

23" Cinema Display

21,995,00 SEK!

This is over 61,000 SEK! for the G5 with 512 MB Ram and 23"
display!(must be way over £5000)

73,155 SEK with G5 2 Gb Ram and 23" display!

try yourself, works out right

[Drool] Damn you all money-laden lucky bastards!

I ordered my own dual G5: the air version. It's completely made of air, it's free, there's no shipping time, and you don't have to place an order.

Edit: Changed :'s to []'s

I wonder how accurate apple's estimated ship dates are... "on or before 10/30/2003" is kinda vauge....
I've got my HD CD now, but I can't use it because my G4 doesn't have an ADC connector...and its killing me. Do I drop the 100 bucks on an ADC adapter so I can use the display in the mean time? hmmmm....

It's much less vague than something like "Next year," or "When it's done." That means before Halloween (for those who recognize the holiday).

don't order extra ram from apple. the cost to upgrade from 512mb - 1GB costs more than if you just buy 1GB from crucial [which is what I'm doing].

I usually do the same with hard disks, but in this case the G5 can only hold 2 drives, so I got the 250GB drive instead of the smaller one.

Two questions:

1. Would I be better off getting a larger hard drive for video editing or should I go for two separate drives instead? I know Premiere on the PC always recommended two separate drives. One would be the scratch drive for editing.

2. If I do get the second drive, are they proprietary or can I get a S-ATA drive from somewhere like newegg and save some serious money?

Get one large drive, 120 GB or more (you can get these in the neighborhood of $100 now! Crazy...), and partition it if you want 2 volumes. You'll save money this way.

I maxed out the dual G5 on Apple's site for a grand total of over $15,000... of course, a third of that is RAM and another third is dual 23" monitors.

partitioning a single drive will get you nothing except two separate volumes.

the only reason you would want another drive would be to have it on a separate bus so that the throughput to the drive can be higher.

This really doesn't matter much though, I have had zero problems with performance when running the system drive as the scratch disk.

regardless, you can only put two drives in a G5 so I would recommend getting the largest drive you can afford.

Apple says they're going to ship mine on or before 08/29/03. I ordered a Dual 2GHz with 1GB o' RAM on 07/02/03.

And still not one word about Apple actually shiping dualies.

get the big drive. The performance differences will be fairly small on those large files with decent drives, and the future expandability may be critical. Unless you intend to launch apps all the time while doing video editing...
