Anyone know if it will be possible to use internet connection sharing?

I currently have a Treo that has broadband access (around 500 kbps), which I use to get online with my MacBook. This is the most important feature to me and I was wondering if the iPhone supports this functionality. If so, can you please provide me with a link that has more information? I couldn't dig anything up on it.

Anyone? :)

Too bad Apple doesn't release more specs about the phone as it would certainly help more people decide whether or not it is worth it to buy this phone.

you mean whether one can use the iPhone as a GPRS/EDGE modem for the MacBook? should theoretically be possible. i _guess_ they wouldn't allow it for "normal" cellphones like all those SonyEricsson ones and suddenly stop allowing it for their own phone...

The facility you're talking about is called DUN (Dial Up Networking) and it is currently not available on the iPhone.

I do not think this will be difficult for Apple to implement - essentially allowing a "settings" option that tweaks the "sharing" System Preference to allow a bluetooth connection to be published out the EDGE port. Unfortunately, this has not yet been done.

This would be a tremendously useful facility where normal Laptop Internet connectivity is not available but you have a cellphone signal.

You can use Internet Connection sharing, because that is a feature of the Mac - IE, if you can get your Mac on the Internet, you can use your Phone off it via Wifi - but I presume you are asking the other way. This is actually called Tethering and is a feature offered by most cell phones when a data plan is available, and is often done over bluetooth (for example, I was able to tether my laptop to my old Sony Ericsson via Bluetooth on AT&T). Unfortunately, the iPhone does not currently support tethering - hopefully in the next firmware update they will add that feature.

Yes you can, but it's kind of complicated.

I installed a SSH server by following these instructions, but you may not need any of this or just the first guide to install the proxy server.

Start with this.

Just follow the instructions on how to use Jailbreak here.

SSH server.

Then install the proxy server.

Awesome. Thanks for the update.

Can you tell me what kind of results that you get when you go to www.speedtest.net on your laptop and whether or not you are close to a cell tower? (i.e. how many bars are on your phone)

I'm actually not in the US now, and won't be back until the 12th. I had already left before any of this stuff was working on the iPhone. I definitly plan on trying it when I get home though.
