AOL IM problem in OS X 10.2.3

I'm trying to help my niece with an AOL Instant Messenger 4.5.967 problem and I hope someone here can assist me.

She has an eMac running OS X 10.2.3 and although she can connect using AOL IM she cannot see any of her buddies on-line, nor can they see her. The program worked fine last week and no settings have changed. I've tried reinstall the program but that did not help. It's strange that she can connect and see her buddies in the off-line column, but can't see anyone on-line. Since the buddy list is on the AOL server this doesn't make sense to me.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

While you get that fixed, I suggest you use Adium or iChat. They run faster than AIM, and look better than AIM. As I'm typing this, I'm using Fire (allows one to chat with yahoo, AIM, and MSN members)... and I also like it more than I like AIM. I can't stand AIM... :(

Get them all at versiontracker.com

The problem is she DID try iChat and although her buddies showed up, they were in the off-line status like AOL IM :(

I think I know what's wrong. :)

Open up the System Prefs, go to Sharing, and click the firewall tab. If it's on, there's your problem. What to do... Click "New...", select "AOL Instant Messenger," and make sure the box next to it is checked. Close System Prefs up, then you can use any AIM program you like, including iChat.

Ricky, that was a great suggestion but as it turns up AOL IM started working before I could try your suggestion. I guess it was just an AOL problem -- what else is new ;-)

I will be saving your suggestion though because I can see where that would come in handy.

Thanks greatly to all of you guys for the prompt help!

It can also be the TOC / Oscar problem. AIM uses both systems - TOC is the old that allows to do less, and Oscar is the one that iChat uses - if the AIM is NOT using oscar, you can't see you mac.com buddies, and vice versa.

Fire is weird, in that i see BOTH mac.com buddies and those that use oscar. also GAIM seems to do that ... but Adium and Trillian don't allow o communicate with mac.coms coms at all so they probably are in TOC. So, sometimes i need to be connected in one nick in ichat and with an other in fire or adium.

It could be that the system has switched from TOC to Oscar or vice versa.
