How can I add other colours beyond 'graphite' and 'blue' to my appearance list? I know it's probably a stupid question, and there are in all likelihood programs that will let me turn my text sideways. Anyone out there willing to help a novice adjust the colour of his monitor's appearance to blood red?

ThemePark is one utility that allows you to create your own themes for OS X by modifying resource files, but if you are a novice you will find it a lot easier just to get ShapeShifter and download third party themes from ResExcellence.
Though not my cup of tea, you might go for Black Cherry, pxd 3, or Marshmallow (it's sort of red, go figure.) Anyway, there are quite a few different themes out there from which to choose.
