Apple aims to boost bandwidth with 1.5GHz G4s

I don't know if this is Old news, or Something to be proud Of (Beating SimX i mean! :D)

...

Recent word from sources close to Motorola confirm that a significant speed bump will be timed for MacWorld Expo in July, raising current bus speeds, and seeing new 7470-based G4s raise frequencies to as high as 1.5Ghz.

The 7470 supports PC2100 DDR-SDRAM memory at 266MHz. More importantly the new G4 supports front side bus speeds of 133MHz and 166MHz, which double to 266MHz and 333MHz. The most dramatic bandwidth improvement would be a jump to 266Mhz, and although we don't know if that choice has been made, but a more modest increase to 166Mhz (2x) would be more in keeping with recent announcements. The 7470 has a little brother, the 7460, which differs by omitting support for a L3 cache. The 7470 supports up to 4MB of L3.

Rather than us Both, MERE PC User's squabbling, we can Simply Smile, "we BEAT SimX" :D :D :D haha!!

While dual 1.5ghz chips would make me very happy, I bet we are more likely to see 1.4ghz in July. Mainly because Apple knows it has a mhz ceiling with Motorola, and will likely hold the 1.5ghz chips for the next speed bump, later in the year.

Realistically, Apple will probably release machines in these configs:

1.0ghz w/ combo drive / GF4MX
1.2ghz w/ Super Drive / GF4MX
dual 1.4ghz w/ Super Drive / GF4MX

I would loved to be proved wrong though....

If you pay attention to the G4 and XServe models, you'll notice that Motorola has had no problems making G4s at 1 GHz. It has always been a problem for them in the past to produce enough of the high end chips. This suggests to me that they should have no trouble getting decent yields of chips higher than 1 GHz. I think definitely 1.4 (at least) for the next batch, but higher is certainly not out of the question.

According to Macworld Magazine (this month, Apollo on the Rise article, Pg 21 under “Here comes the Sun”), the G4 Appollo chip is expected to close the gap between the G4 and rivals to at least close this year… And although the G5 has already been debuted for the embedded-processor market – it seems that the G5 in a end-user computer is still a bit off…

That's kinda sad for the G5 - but if we can close the gap with the G4, then there's nothing lost! :)

ill get my next mac when i go to college in 3 years... probaly the best g5 by then... something like appolo g5? 5 ghz? who knows, maybe?

Good plan. ;)
Except Apollo is the current G4's name (the 1Ghz+), I'm sure the G5 will have a different name. :)
