Im in a broadcast journalism class at school and we have a rather a large mac lab with many mac. We have about 5 power macs (our older computers) that we would still like to use because there not outdated at all. We have two of them that are being very VERY unresponsive. One of them when we boot it up it just hangs at boot screen then the fans get VERY loud and it wont get past boot the other one we boot up the wheel dosnt even start to spin and then the apple logo gets replaced with some messed up distorted *white fuzz* picture!

We really need help with this problem seeing how we our in a broadcast journalism class and we need to use these computers.

Do you still have the original install disk? I ask because one them will have on it "HardWare Test". Booting (holding down the 'c' key to boot from a CD/DVD) from the disk and running the test might tell you what's wrong.

Many iMac G5 computers suffer a failed power supply while others have a problem with the logic boards -- specifically, the capacitors near the power supply over-heat and expand. When this happens, you could experience a number of symptoms including the inability for the computer to turn on as well as some random crashing and freezing issues.

See the following Apple document: http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/

It sounds like some of those iMac G5s have experienced the logic board and PSU failure from bad capacitors. Have them call Apple so that the logic board and the PSUs can be replaced on them through the program that macworks linked above.

I speak from experience since my 2nd-gen iMac G5 experienced the same problems. Even though mine wasn't listed in the range of serial numbers, it was quite evident by the look of the capacitors that I was having the same problem listed. Apple replaced it at no cost to me under the extension program.
