Apple Mail: how to keep attachments in folder, not in message?

Hello,

I've recently changed from Eudora to Mail and I'm still finding my way with it. What I liked about Eudora is that it stored attachments in a designated folder. Mail however seems to store attachments embedded in the message it was sent with. I'm used to keeping my received messages (archive), but haven't any use or need to keep al the linked attachments to those messages. I've noticed that you can set a downloads folder, but to my knowledge the attachments are only stored there once you chose to do so in that specific message. What I'd like is this to be automated and attachments then removed so only the text of the message remains. Is this possible?

Thanks!

P.
