Hi.
Have just completed an ONYX after backup (first time of using - I checked the 'Rebuild Mail's Envelope Index').
All seems well except that Mail now hangs when firing up. No display of message headers. Below is the Console log.
I need to have the best advice - and soon. Please help.

This hint will require you to remember your email server settings because it will rebuild the Inbox but not touch your saved email (if the Saved Mail was saved into separate Mail box folders).

1. Write down, find or remember the email server settings for your email sever!
2. Quit Mail.
3. Navigate to /YourHardDrive/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and move the file com.apple.mail.plist to the desktop.
4. Launch Mail and it will act as if you never launched it before. Set it back up for your settings and see it if it works. You saved email still should be in the Mail program.

If that doesn't fix the problems you can always quit Mail and move that ile com.apple.mail.plist back to the /Preferences/ folder (and overwrite the current file). This way mail will go back to your original settings.

Plus is Mail starting up and just never finds the email server? What version of OS X are you running? Do you have Growl running?

Are doing this now.
Taking forever to rebuild ... still waiting. (just under 10000 messages).

Nothing to do with the server - just won't populate the windows even. Latest OSX. Growl running - but no comments.
No console messages other than the one above.

Make sure you have an updated version of Growl because it has been noticed by many Mac users that an older version of Growl plays havoc with Mail.

Well thank you. I had tried several times to 'cancel' the import. Each time it quit the app. However, I did eventually get it open. There was the growl checked. I unchecked, quit and reloaded. The cancel worked again, and I was able to click 'Rebuild' from the menu for each of the mailboxes. Seems to have brought it back to life OK - though with a few quirks of apparently 'unread' mails which are in the past and I know I have read.
Also ran MailTags rebuild just in case and all seemed to come back to life. The smart Mail boxes are also intact. So ... probably the growl was creating the hang ...
Without this tip I would probably have resorted to sacrifice all existing mail and started again. So thank you for pointing this out.
By the way - it seems I have some very old mail I cannot access because the mailboxes in the Library are outside the folder. I suppose I can't just drag them in... ?
