Apple stopped taking in hardware for repairs?! (except AppleCare covered products)

I'm on the phone to an Apple Tech Support rep. Very friendly man, and perhaps the best Rep so far. He actually KNOWS his stuff.

But he told me he couldn't take my Powerbook in for repairs. Something over Apple losing too much hardware in shipping (that was his suggestion).

So, he suggested that I would have to go to the nearest authorised dealer with repair qualifications. After prompting for my post code he realised the nearest DEALER let alone repairer was 50 miles away at least.

This is scary. Will I ever be able to get it repaired? Lol.

One good thing: The man told me to call Customer Services on Monday, and tell them my problem. He said they'll most likely make an exception due to my location. I hope so.

I'm still on the phone...

Sounds like he doesn't know his stuff. I haven't heard anything about Apple not taking machines in for repair. Call back and get a supervisor. Keep going up the ladder. Don't let them put you off.

Both people said call Customer Relations on Monday. THAT is where I won't give up. there is NO WAY I am travelling 50 miles to a dealer (I don't even think it was a legit repair shop) and I don't want go 120 miles to London to get it repaired at the Apple Store.

I won't let them put me off.

You could, of course, send your PB to that authorized dealer, too, if Apple truly doesn't do repairs anymore (?!).

Yeah, I need to find it first.

I could call Apple on that I guess.

Anyhow, I am going to call them on Monday, and I won't give up.

I heard that they would still be doing repairs but that the AppleCare package prices would just be rising.

Bah, had to do some things after school=couldn't call them. Guess it means more time for them to think of a good answer to why I can't send my product in. Will it matter? NO. I will make sure they repair my Pbook.

Anyhow, all sorted :D

I have some Apple Technicians coming allll the way down here to repair the darn thing.

Are you in Europe? They used to send portables to ADT, and that was cancelled a few weeks ago .. so yes, if you live in say Northern Norway or Southern Italy, you don't have much luck with finding authorized service providers..

Yeah I'm in the UK. I would have had to send it off to Apple Ireland. But they've been very kind and are sending out some technicians to help me.

Apple rules.

now that sounds very nice indeed. how did you manage that - did they just offer it like that on the phone..?

good going, anyhow ;)
alex.

Well I explained my situation (Being 50 miles away from a suspected Repair shops and 120 miles away from a guaranteed repair shop) and the man, who was very friendly, said he couldn't help with that. So I asked to speak with his supervisor. After a bit, he put me in hold to talk about something and then came back and said he would send some people down. Better than sending the item there. I then asked to speak to the original guy, if he wasn't busy. He wasn't so I quickly said thanks, and no offense if I sounded annoyed at him. Best support ever.
