I'm in the UK. Yesterday my ADSL D-Link modem failed to connect to the internet. Wasn't sure if it was me or the ISP. It was Saturday. It was late. and I was desperate so I dashed to the Apple Store at Brent Cross in London.

They don't stock any modems!!!!

Roadworks stopped me getting to PC World half a mile away. So I came home and went food shopping in Tesco. They had some cheap ADSL modems. Lynksys and Zoom. Only the Zoom mentioned the Mac on the box so I bought it. It's an X6 router with wi-fi. Under £30. Came home, opened the box and it had a CD with windows drivers on it and some pdf instructions. Mac didn't need drivers. Clicked on "Auto configure". Saved to flash memory. And it worked!! :)

BUT what is Apple doing about modems? The UK online Apple Store sells one - a Netgear ADSL 2+. But it has received some bad reviews.

So, when I go to 24 MB broadband, what do I get?

I have the Motorola SB5120 and it works great. It is a DOCSIS 2.0 modem meaning it is the latest cable modem technology you can buy.

Just make sure the modem you buy is on your ISP list of compatible modems. Go to your ISP home page and go into the tech settings area and look for the compatible modem list.

ISP is a small local company that connects to the national carrier BT. They don't have a list of recommended modems. They only recommend one they can supply.....Zyxel. I've not heard of them.

But, in general, they are a good ISP. Less than a dozen employees, and just down the road. If you ring "customer support" you get through to the man on the control desk who can tell you what the problem is and works the options through. Also unlimited bandwidth!

They have only ever been selling the Apple USB modem. Not exactly what you want for a DSL.
More than enough competition for the modems I guess.

Just ask the ISP if you need a DOCSIS 2 or DOCSIS 1 modem and if the brand you want is compatible. Most ISPs (here in the USA) like using Motorola modems so my first suggestion might be a good choice.
