Apple System Profiler quits when opening!

Arg. I'm trying to make an Apple System Profiler report, but whenever I launch the utility, it quits before opening. This is different from a thread I saw that said it would crash simply when clicking the "Devices & Volumes" tab.

I think I remember seeing this problem on MacFixIt.com, but since they've launched their Pro service and I haven't been able to register yet, I can't search their archives for the answer. So does someone remember how to solve this problem?

(As a side note, if anyone else is having this problem, you can generate a report by opening the Terminal, and typing AppleSystemProfiler > UNIX_ASP_report.txt. I thought that was pretty cool that Apple thought to include a command-line version of the profiler utility.) :D

What are the LS* files? And, no, I haven't tried fixing the disk. The reason is that I think I remember MacFixIt to have posted a very specific remedy for this problem, like they did for the crashing Sharing preference pane. That's what I was looking for.

Ah, OK. It seems deleting those three LS* files (now I know what you meant :) ) fixed the prob. Thanks!

I still think it's awesome there's an AppleSystemProfiler command that you can issue from the Terminal. :)

SimX,

Can you please elaborate on the solution of this problem? I am having the same exact problem in OS 10.2.3. Thanks.

the LS files are not used after 10.2. try deleting the file 'com.apple.asp.plist' in your ~/library/preferences folder, and log out/log back in, then try ASP. remember that ASP loads hardware items, and lots of software lists, probably corrupts its own pref files pretty easily!
