Apple to move to AMD x86 after 2003?

Well, you've just posted someone else's opinion about a rumour on this board, congratulations. :)

Still, this is going to take *some* months if not a few years. The Power4 processor is - like was also stated in this thread, I believe - a _very_ high end processor, which doesn't exactly fit the market where the PowerMac G4 is in right now. It's also a no-go for any future PowerBook. Maybe the rumours point us to a closer IBM/Apple partnership, where a new chip might be developped, based on the Power4.

The G5 by Motorola is a processor that will see the light. If Apple chooses *not* to use it, they must have an alternative that is viable. All this tells me that we're really in a state of rumours, where no facts are available to us. What we know is from the past, there are no real news other than that Apple sees much life in the G4, which tells us nothing else than *not* to expect a G5 (or other replacement) any time soon in the PowerMacintosh line.

fryke,

I couldn't agree with you more about the Power4 not making it into a Macintosh. There was another post around here somewhere recently with people discussing hopes that a Power4 would be the "next" wonder chip to go into a Mac. I've read IBM's technical information on the Power4 and I know that it would never find its way in a Mac. True, it's a very high-end processor, and very power hungry. I'm just posting a rumor (someone else's words, and properly quoted with the link) to make it very easy to read this speculation in the rumors section of this wonderful site I'd almost call my second neighborhood.

I like to post the full quote if possible and reasonable since sites can somtimes take down the link. This way, everyone gets to read the text.
