Apple told they can't claim the G5 is the fastest

Apple told to halt 'world's fastest' claims for G5.

The Council of Better Business Bureaus has recommended that Apple Computer discontinue comparative performance claims regarding its Power Mac G5 desktop.

Acting on a tip from Apple rival Dell, the council's National Advertising Division (NAD) "determined that the evidence provided by Apple did not provide a reasonable basis for its broad unqualified claims that its Power Mac G5 is 'the world's fastest, most powerful personal computer' and that it 'edged out the competition on integer.'"

Is this anything new?

The G5 may not be the fastest personal computer, but we already knew that. Such claims don't last forever, and while they may have been true when the G5 first launched, they aren't true now. At least, not until we see a new revision of the Powermac line.

Also, I was under the impression that Apple stopped using that ad months ago. This looks like nothing more than Dell whining about Apple's ad campaign. I think this will backfire on Dell.

that was pretty much my take on it too. I found it odd that this was cropping up now, 9 months after the G5 was introduced.

Same. It would have felt more relevant if it popped up two weeks after the G5 line was introduced or something.

So does this mean that Apple can make the claim again as soon as the latest revisions of the G5s are out?

its a shame that with the new g5s in autumn. and much better optimisation through 10.4 , the mac will be much faster ....
if intel or amd manage somehow to achieve something better... than ill applaud :p

@Randman
That depends on the speed that they're launched at. If they push out a dual 3.0 Ghz chip, that'll practically blow away anything on the x86 side. From what I can see, the G5 is about competitive with the Opteron clock-for-clock. Intel's P4 isn't competitive with the Opteron so we can forget about it for now. The Opteron isn't going anywhere near 3.0 Ghz anytime soon, so if Apple gets a G5 out this year that runs at 3.0 Ghz, hello speed crown.

Without knowing what kind of optimizations have already been put into Panther, its hard to say how much of a speed increase 10.4 will bring. But hey, its Apple and since they've managed to impress me with the move from 10.2 - 10.3, I'm prepared for anything :)

the G5 must fly though, subjectively speaking i guess. i ran a little test with my powerbook and my parents desktop computer. i exported the same video file in quicktime to .mov (from mpg) on both computes. my powerbook (g4 @ 1 GHz with 512 mb pc133 sdram) did it in 1 min 27 seconds while the desktop (P IV @ 1.8 GHz with 512 mb pc2700 ddr ram) did it it slightly over 2 minutes.

::ha::

Bear in mind, Quicktime is probably far more optimized for the G4/G5 series of processors than it is for the P4.

A fairer test IMHO would be to convert a DVD to DivX since its done by open source people who try to optimize for all architectures. But since I don't know much about professional video, I'll shut up now :)

i was actually thinking that; Quicktime is an Apple product. I'll give it a shot with DivX. I'll let you know.

i read on macosrumors about 10.4... they say it will come in 2 diff. versions, one for g4 and one for g5.... they say it will give the g5 sum serious speed increases...
now theyre not a really good rumour site.. they just make claims without backing up... or they're never correct... ... but still sounds interesting!

Well, Apple doesn't need to offer 2 different versions to get the speed boosts for the G5. The only release of OS X that was different for the G4 and G5 was 10.2.8 when the G5 first came out.

It is pretty easy to create something similar to FAT binaries in OS X... the format for software packages makes it really easy to create a package that has code to run on multiple platforms, so even if they need different binaries for the optimizations, they can simply include those binaries in the same software packages. MacOSRumors hasn't been accurate in the past couple of years, so I wouldn't put stock in them now.

The only reason to do 2 different releases would be if one was 64bit...which could be a nice thing.

Let's just hope the 3ghz statement turns true...I'm gonna be buying a workstation in August (or start to look then anyway) and a DP 3 or higher sounds good...real good.

Well, let's just hope SJ keeps his word this WWDC and shows off 3Ghz machines.

Rest assured, there won't be two releases... Panther already has a 64-bit version of the memory management code for the G5s included. They won't need to split 10.4 into two releases for any reason (everything has been in place for years to seemlessly move to 64-bit archetectures, or to a non-PPC arch from the user standpoint).
