I know this is an a service for spell checker, but it should run in the background. TIger is working great for me except whenever spell check is involved the applespell.service icon is launched in my dock, which is rather annoying. I repaired permissions and it didn't work. Also i don't know if this helps or not but in the activity monitor the applespell.service was under my processes and shouldn't it be under roots processes? If anyone can help that will be great. Thanks.
 
I really have no idea whatsoever how this could happen... If it'd happen to me, I'd probably simply reinstall. To weird a problem for me. I know, that's not really what you wanted to hear, but I thought if no-one answer's it, I'd rather answer like this than not...
 
I am having this same issue, if anybody else has a solution that doesn't involve reinstalling mac os x or removing AppleSpell.service ;) I would be happy to hear too.

The issue happens for me whenever I try to send messages with Mail.app, also when you right click on AppleSpell.service in the dock it says it is not responding.
 
It looks like this may be a 64bit issue. My G5 exhibits the same problem but not the G4 (dual).
It is annoying. But not critical.
What concerns me is the "Not Responding" message and the fact that you have to do a Force Quit.
 
One more data point. This happens with TextEdit, but not with Appleworks (for me). So it may be something in the TextEdit calling syntax. (Or, Appleworks uses a different service)
 
I only see this problem on my imac g5 at home, my powermac g5 at work doesn't seem to have a problem.
 
Regarding hanging applespell.service....

Everything was working fine until I used a program called MainMenu

I cleared all the user caches and found that the applespell.service in the dock. No way to kill off applespell.service unless I use Force Quit.

MainMenu application has another option which fixes the problem. Select "Deep Clean" from the "System Clean Cache" menu.

You'll need to reboot. MAC OS X will take an extra few minutes to rebuild the cache files. It may appear to be hanging while re-making the top bar, but be patient. Some applications will recreate their cache files when launched.

I don't know which file is troubled. Hope this helps.
 
I had this occur on my G5 before I moved from the 10.4 pre-release versions to 10.4 normal. Clean install fixed it, but I'll have a look if there are other ways to fix it too.
Maybe the next system update could fix it as well, if it's not super urgent.
