appletalk problems

Hi, I have a blue g3 running system 10.2.8. I also am running a beige g3 running system 8.5. I am trying to use appletalk to connect the 2 units together, I have used a patch cable to both ethernet ports. On the beige appletalk is activated, the blue says it is deactivated and I am unable to activate it. (The beige unit is to be used for a viper rip, which functions, the blue one is to send print jobs to the beige one) Any suggestions. Thanks

On OS X (different from OS 8/9), ethernet must be setup in order for appletalk to function. Ethernet is only functioning if it has a valid IP address. To do what you want, in Network Prefs, Show built-in ethernet, TCP/IP tab, set configure Manually and enter a valid local IP address - use 192.168.5.5. Then make sure appletalk is checked on for ethernet. Now you can connect for sharing.

the 2 Macs cannot use the same IP address, so set one differently, such as 192.168.5.6
