Appleworks Problem

I have been using Appleworks 6.2.9 for a couple years. Recently it stopped working - I would double click on a file to open or try to open the program itself and nothing would happen. I tried throwing the program in the trash to prepare to reinstall and it wouldn't let me trash it saying that Appleworks Essentials, Starting Points, Clippings, and Appleworks 6 were in use. I did Command I, get info, on the program and those files and the locked box was grayed out, so I couldn't unlock. Then when I went back to try to open an Appleworks document, it opened up using an old version of Appleworks with the old OS 9 look. So then I tried using the new Updater and it says it can't find a default location to install to. Not long before I got into this problem I was bumping up against the hard drive space limit, getting dire warnings about not enough space to open programs, as a result of loading up too many jpeg photos. I was having some erratic behavior in Apple's Mail program as a result, but I deleted the photos and I thought everything was back to normal. But now I'm wondering if that situation has caused a problem with Appleworks. Perhaps I should mention I have the hard drive partitioned with all the applications, including Appleworks, in one partition, and my files in another partition, although there hasn't been any problem with that so far that I know of. Any idea what I can do to clean up this mess?
