when i launch internet explorer, netscape navigator and other applications i get the message "the application **** has unexpectedly quit." some apps are ok while others get the same message. i cant even open these things before they quit. have run norton disc doctor, norton virus (although its not the most recent as i cant download the update) and repaired the disc permissions but i still get the same message.

if i leave the pb running without doing anything to it it will crash after about ten minutes

i have a 15" pb 1 ghz running 10.2.2. os 9 is fine and everything runs perfectly on it.

i would appreciate any help on this at all.

cheers
dave

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum.
Get into the home/Libraries/Preferences folder and delete the corresponding plist files from those apps.
Be sure there are no settings you don't want to lose. Deleting those plist files will run the app in the default mode. At least take a backup of those files you want to delete. Or simply move them into another folder.
Good luck!

The "Home" folder is your user's folder, so if your username is davebhoy:

/davebhoy/Library/Preferences

is where you will find the preference files (.plist) for your applications. Sometimes a preference file can become corrupt, crashing the program on startup. Deleting the preference file will force the program to create a new one.

If that doesn't work, let us know.

By the way, you can get there through the Finder if you'd rather not use Terminal. Click on Mac Hd > Users > davebhoy > Library > Preferences and you'll see the files.

Also, try emptying the internet cache. And if you have autofill turned on in safari, edit it out to a manageable size.

i cant find any plist files for the applications that wont open in the area you suggested. its a struggle now to get anything done before the pb crashes anyway, even if i dont try to open an application. aaargh.

thanks for your help on this, guys

Norton has a history of messing up OS X (search around, you'll find plenty of threads here and eeverywhere else).
Have you added ram lately? It could be bad ram.
Do a search and try and find the plists, they are in your system.

Chances are that Norton is what's causing your problems. Get it off your system completely before going any further, then run FSCK and see how the machine works after that.

Another thing to try is repairing permissions. Incorrect permissions can cause certain problems. I seem to recall reading about someone having apps crash as they started up. The apparent reason was that they couldn't access what they needed to due to incorrect permissions.

The procedure:

1. Go to your /Applications/Utilities (or shift-Apple key-U from with Finder selected).
2. Run Disk Utility.
3. Select your hard drive.
4. Select the 'Repair Permissions' button.
5. Wait. Get coffee. Wait. Repeat.
