Application incorrectly being recognized as a document

A program I downloaded off the internet isn't being recognized as an application—when I click on it, it gives the "there is no default application set to open this document...etc" message. The program was initially compressed in a .rar archive (I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not...). If anyone could help with this I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Edit: Oh and I'm sure the application is os x compatible. I've also tried re-downloading it and it gives me the same problem.

Try appending ".app" to the application's name and see if that fixes it.

It seems odd that it would be in a rar, though. It's not exactly a Mac-friendly format. If you control-click on the application, is there a "Show Package Contents" item in the menu? If not, then I don't think the application could have survived the rar format.

Here's something to try.... rename the application and add ".app" (without the quotation marks) to the very END of the name. The Finder will ask if you're sure you want to append .app.... do it. THEN try launching the application.

Hope this helps...

EDIT: lol. Well, we agree. Yay for posting at the same time.

Tell us the program and where you got it. I, for one, will
be happy to take a look at it. I expect some of the real
experts will, too.
