Applications dissappearing

A few days ago i clicked on the safari icon in the dock and a question mark appeared. I did a search in the finder and apparently the app was missing. I reinstalled it and so far so good. Today I clicked on the address book in the dock and same thing... question mark. now I can't find the address book on the hard drive either. Any idea what's going on here? I can't imagine having accidentally trashed these apps myself.

The solution to your problem is to buy a PC. .. lol, no I'm kidding. I would suggest that you navigate to Hard Disk -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility and repair the permissions on the volume. I'm, pretty sure you'll find tons of errors because let's face it, OS X constantly screws up its own permissions.

Thanks for the tip Andre. As far as PCs go, I have a ton of them, but this machine a lot more fun, and it's my first Mac. I ran the utility and repaired permissions, but no dice. I've also searched the entire HD but no Address Book :( I also ran the "Restore Software" utility, but it didn't bring it back. I'm guessing that reinstalling OSX is the only way to get it back again?

KirkB,

Look for your 'Applications' folder, NOT the 'Applications(Mac OS 9) folder. That's different. It should be off the root directory of your hard drive.

It sounds like Applications may have been moved accidentally or deleted.

Doug

P.S. You're right. I've used PCs for decades. Macs ARE more fun. :)

Hey Doug, thanks for the reply. Yep, I've still got my Applications folder off the root. It looks like everything is still in there except for the Address Book. The only thing I can figure is that it somehow got trashed (it's not in the trash either, I already looked). I just find it odd that the same thing happened to Safari a few days ago. I'm a multimedia developer who's been using computers for years, so unless I had a few senior moments, I can't imagine trashing these things myself.

I'm also having this same question mark problem... I found this topic using search... just wondering if someone has found a solution...

If you did indeed accidently erase an app that came with OS X, you can use a free program called Pacifist to selectively install just that app from the OS X System CDs.

Search the net for Pacifist.

Doug

You (neither of you) remember moving or deleting any of these applications?

I am having the same exact problem. The app is Safari that is giving me trouble. I have never deleted the program, and I have had to reinstall it once already. Then today I went to use it and I got a question mark on the app and nothing happened. I tried doing the permission fix but to no avial. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks,
Steve

Well I'm not sure about the cause, or the fix, but it is still a beta, so that might have something to do with it for Safari. I'm not sure about the other programs.
