Applications launching by themselves?

Has this ever happened to you and what the blazes is going on?

(I have DSL connection and run an iMac 10.3.9. My DSL is BellSouth and it is encrypted. People who come here with their laptops can't run on my connection.)

I went to bed one night, having quit all apps. (I am a bit obsessive about quitting my apps., no doubt at all that I may have not done so.) I woke up the next morning and when I sat down and moved my mouse, interrupting my screensaver, there was my browser launched and had loaded, of all things, my bank's web site! There it sat, with the log-in window staring at me. I hadn't been on my bank's web site in over two weeks.

Today, I was on my downstairs Mac, reading email. I quit Entourage, grabbed my keys and ran to town. I've just returned, launched Entourage again and got a message that my Entourage had "exceeded the number of licenses". I knew what that meant and, sure enough, when I ran upstairs to my other Mac that absolutely no one ever uses, Entourage was running. I had to quit it and come back downstairs and then successfully launched it on my downstairs Mac. (Remember, I was just using Entourage on my downstairs Mac when I left and when I came back, I couldn't, until I went upstairs and turned it off there.)

So, my question is: do any of you ever have apps. that launch spontaneously on their own? I'm here alone, so there's no question of children or roommates or anyone messing with the computer.

No. Doesn't happen to me.

Okay, thanks.

(For all the rest of you that this has never happened to, it's okay if you just ignore this thread. I was just hoping for some input from anyone who had an idea why this might be happening.)

Thanks.

Look in the Accounts PreferencePane and see if these apps are in the Startup Items

Look in the Startup Items folders in ;

/Library/Startup Items

System/Library/Startup Items

User/Library/Startup Items

I got pretty excited when I read your post, BobW, because that would have explained alot. But, sadly, neither of these applications appear in any Start Up Item folder.

It's a real head-scratcher!

Thanks for the suggestion.

Press and hold the Dock Icon for the applications concerned. Is "Open at Login" ticked in the pop-up menu?

No, in fact, "Open at Login" isn't even an option that shows up in the pop-up menu. The thing that's making this so bizarre is simply that I always have to manually launch these applications. And my closing them when I'm done with them is literally a habit that I've had for years. Just the fact that my browser not only launched but opened up my bank's web site (I don't even have that bookmarked) puts a weird tint to the whole thing.

I have my filesharing turned off, I can't imagine that someone could manipulate my computer remotely. That's a bit Matrix, isn't it?

I'm stymied.

I use "Quit". For instance, I'm using Netscape right now. When I'm done posting, I will go up to the word "Netscape" on the top left (next to the blue apple) and hold the mouse down for the pull-down menu then slide down to Quit Netscape. That's how I exit all my apps.

No poltergeists around here, unless you count the neighbor's dog.....

:)

Do you have some kind of third-party utility for quickly and easily launching applications? Perhaps that is the culprit.

I seem to recall seeing this problem on a client's computer, but simply cannot remember the culprit.

In Entourage, check under the Tools menu>Run Schedule>Edit Schedule

See how it's set. Could be it checks automatically, depending on how you have it setup.

Under the Window Menu>Check For Updates - look what that's set for.
