AppStore updates

Right now the AppStore icon has a badge on it indicating 4 updates. When I open it, it says no updates are available. What does this mean?
 
It's been a bit flaky lately. Double click the home button and then quit (the 'x') the App Store. Then start it up again and all should be OK.
 
I ignored the issue for a couple of days. Then it did say 4 updates were available, I installed them, and all has been sweetness and light since.
