Archive And Install

After archiving under direction of Mac Tech people and re- installing Tiger even though following the info sent on restoring I am really having problems. I go through all of the steps up to "save image file to current desktop, says to "press Command-D" but that doesn't work so I use the save button on disk utility. The image file is supposed to appear on my desktop, but I can't open it, get a am icon that looks like a hard drive but there is nothing there. Thank-you
