Are there extension-like entities in X?

I want to remove some things that I will never use, one of them being text to speech ability, for example. How do I go about doing this?

I'm brand new to X but I have some unix experience, if that makes a difference. So far I like X, but I'd like to make it a bit trimmer.

I think veryone is a bit puzzled about issues like this.

There are daemons that run in the background and Kernel extensions. I would be very careful about removing files at this point. You may be able to remove a kext but it could prevent you from booting if you did. What we need to do is get a list of what all the kexts do so that we can determine how to deal with them. I'll start a new thread under general discussion for this.

You mean you want to turn off Text to Speech (System Prefs) or you want to free up hard drive space?
