Asus 167G Dongle Problem

Hi, I´m staying in slovena at the minute and the village where I am has free wireless internet. I am using a G4 1gig tower with an asus 167g dongle. Thing is I cannot pick up any networks using the dongle. I scan for networks and nothing. Ihave turned the radio on, but it says it is of when I look in the status window? I had this working at home with my home wireless network. I have looked on their site but am none the wiser. I read something about it only working up to forty meters. Anyone any ideas?Thanks
