ATI Radeon Mac vs. Radeon 7000 Mac

I also have a G4 400; I use mine mostly for graphics applications
such as Illustrator, Photoshop. And I use it alot. I don't want to
purchase a new system at this point but would like to upgrade my
video card, especially for Jaguar.

I've been looking around and would a Radeon 8500 AGP Mac
really help at G4 400? Or would a Radeon Mac or Radeon
7000 Mac suffice? Also, looking at ATI's web site specs
on the latter two cards, I still can't tell which would be a more
suitable purchase. They look similar to me ... Can anyone give me
suggestions?

Thanks

my G4 400 is AGP. From reading other threads, I get the
sense that I should get a AGP card instead of PCI. Is that
right? I assume my Rage 128 is something like AGP 1x?
So if I get a Radeon 8500 (with 4x AGP?), my system
wouldn't be able to utilize the extra capability anyhow, right?

I also intend to do a bit of 3D work such as Maya, and Ashlar
vellum CAD since I'm also an industrial designer ....

A similar thread was on the Apple support forums. I don't claim to be an expert, but it has something to do with the rom chip on the card, also the fact that the mac version has a adc connector (and if memory serves, the regular 8500 has a dvi connection).

I know that the Mac version has an adc & dvi connection, but that rom is the main thing....

From what I've seen, the geforce render graphics a bit better...and with their new cG graphics technology (www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=cg), thats gonna make things look more realistic, than the ATIs. But that IMHO....*l*

The G4/400 (same machine as I have) has a 2x AGP slot. The Mac version of the 8500 runs both 2x and 4x, so you'd have NO problem with that.

Or, you could do what a whole bunch of adventurous people like me have been doing: get a cheap PC Radeon 8500 LE, and flash the ROM, thereby avoiding the insane prices ATI charges for their Mac cards. I did mine yesterday, and it runs beautifully, kicking the crap out of the old Rage128 pro.
