ATi Retail March 2002 Updates

Some reviews at versiontracker.com said it has improved their iBook/PowerBook. But I am thinking of install it or wait Apple to release their own driver.

I installed it, using stock ATI rage 128 in a B/W G3. It doesn't hurt any, anyway. I don't really use an 3D games, so I haven't noticed any change one way or another. Doesn't seem to be breaking anything though.

Oh well. I have installed it at last. Havn't noticed any changes tho. And did you try the ATi Displays in the Utilities folder? It said I have an unknown card.

It said I have an unknown card too...... The control-panel thing is kind of lame, but other than that, I haven't had any problems...

Maybe we are using Apple-OEM ATi cards... Weird that people using iBook said it has improved speed.

I have a stock Radeon card with my G4 Gigabit tower and this update works great.

Quake 3 Arena shows the most improvement by boosting my framerate from 59fps to 71fps.

They enabled FSAA too and that make Red Faction look awesome. There have been talks elsewhere that there are speed improvements on the 2D side as well. In particular in scrolling through IE5. I recall scrolling quickly in IE5 cause the a jerky motion while trying to read the page, but now it is a lot smoother.

Your mileage may vary, but I am glad that I updated.

The retail updates include the ATI Displays utility, but it won't work with Apple-included cards, like the Rage 128, Rage 128 Pro, or any embedded graphics chip, like in the iBooks, iMac and PowerBooks.

That utility only works with retail cards.

Which is weird, because it recognizes my stock Rage 128 PCI card, but just doesn't offer me any options for it.
