Audio balans (L/R) changes when...

Hi folks.

I hoped anyone knew anything about this issue. When I use my PowerMac G4 17" at home, I am usually at my desk. Being there, I've got exterternal mouse, keyboard and monitor. But this little thing is bugging me: Whenever I plug in the audio cord to my computer speakers (self powered, two sattelites and a sub), the left/right balance of the audio output changes. In the dialog for adjusting it, it's getting set either one inch more on the left side, or the right side. This happens when I plug the cord IN, and sometimes when I plug it out. It's the insertion thing that causes it; once in (and when I've adjusted the correct balance to 50/50) it stays there prefectly.

I haven't really got the time to check things out further, but I think this only happens when the sound system is turned ON, say, if I power on the amplifier for the speakers after I plug it in, this does not happen.

Still, I'd like to find a way to get around it.
