Audio not playing while Web Browsing

Recently I've noticed that audio will not play when I'm browsing the internet. If I go to youtube or myspace or any other media site, I can't hear what's going on - but the audio works fine in all other aspects of my machine. I use firefox and safari and neither of them is working in this regard. I can hear the volume up/down sound on my mac and play audio from itunes with no problem. I've gone into preferences for both firefoz and safari and can't figure it out.

Any suggestions?

This is going to seem very odd, but open Garageband and then close it, and your sound should be ok again. There something in the Core audio that gets restarted when Garageband opens. I had the same problem and this corrected it. Hasn't come back either.
