Audio problems on a new iMac g5

I installed Call of Duty but I can't hear any sound.
Then I thought it was a game problem but I've just realised that my imac g5 neither plays audio of any mpeg files.

I've checked everything in preferences panel... nothing.
Does anyone have an idea?

When you restart the iMac, do you hear a dong chime?

Anything plugged in that might be an additional audio out? Like a Griffin Tech iMic? speakers etc?

A friend of mine had this exact same problem. It was fixed by downloading the latest system update from Apple (10.4.4) and rerunning it.
