.avi file sound not playing

i open a .avi movie in quicktime (mac osx 10.3.4) and the video shows but no sound plays. i know the speakers are working because itunes, etc. plays sound. does anyone know what may be causing this? thanks.

Do you have the DivX QuickTime codec installed?

In addition to divx, consider VLC and MPlayer - which are also freeware.
