Well. So you have an "AVI" file. Where does it come from? What codecs *WERE* used to create the file? Video is fine, so what's the audio? There's about 1233 possibilities. If you open the file in VLC, get info on it. It'll tell you the codec, probably. If we don't know dut about the video file, how should we be able to help you?

And btw.: Please *DO* create better thread titles. Thread titles that read "help", "please help" or "ok...PLEASE help :(" are *NOT* very good. I hope you understand... Changing it now...

Ok, first we need to know what your setup is before we can deduce what the problem is.

Mac OS and version (eg.: "Mac OS 9.2", "Mac OS X 10.1", "Mac OS X 10.4.6", etc.)

Macintosh model (Be specific! eg: "This is a Power Macintosh G4 dual 1.42 GHz MDD")

Version numbers of all pieces of software you're using that's causing the problems.

This will help us to determine what exactly the problem is.

Thanks.

read his signature, though. ;)

True, but he could have said "my PowerBook G4" and that would have clarified things more. Instead, no mention of the system was made in the post so I couldn't really assume that it was his PowerBook. ;)

Yeah, but I really think it's *muuuuuuuch* more important to look at the specific file instead of the specific hardware, anyway. I haven't yet encountered an .avi-file that works fine on a G3 but doesn't on a G5 or vice versa, for example - or on a desktop but not on a notebook... However, I've seen (pun not intended) .avi-files with one codec that work whereas other .avi-files with other codecs that don't.

Yes, we need info on the file. You can get info on a file in any media player.

QuickTime Player: Open the file, and choose "Show Movie Info" from the Window menu.
VLC: Open and PLAY the file, and while it's playing, select "Info" from the Window menu.
MPlayer: Add the file to the playlist, select it, and click the "i" button.

Any of those will tell you the audio and video codecs used.

You also mentioned a WMV file. The Mac version of WMP doesn't support the majority of codecs that are used in WMV files. Use the Flip4Mac WMV Player for QuickTime instead. WMP is officially dead now.

I can't be sure from your description, but it could be a somewhat common system-wide problem. Open Audio Midi Setup (in your Applications/Utilities folder) and be sure that the audio output format is 44100 Hz.

Thanks for your interest and Fair enough, i acknowledge my errors :) - my system info - version of mac osx and what computer im using is at the bottom of my post - the problem seems to be with all files of these types, not just for 1 or 2 individuals. I am using Quicktime 7.0.4 The specifics of the file i am testing this with is as follows:

AVI Format:
3ivx D4 4.5.1, 320 x 240, Millions
MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 24.000 kHz

When i play this file i get tiny snippets of sound

- any more info please ask :)

3ivx cannot play the audio track of DivX-encoded .avi files with MP3 audio tracks without help. One strategy is to use DivX Doctor II to "flatten" the .avi file. DivX Doctor II converts it to a .mov file. However, this is not necessary. Download and install the DivX 6 codec. It will play both your video and sound is it is your only DivX codec without conversion of any kind. In concert with 3ivx, DivX 6 will handle the audio while 3ivx retains control of the video.
