I have the new IBook and I'm getting a high speed connection to the internet. I want to download movies, but I know that my computer needs to be able to download .avi files or other strange files to do so. Right now my computer can't do that. What can I do to fix that problem? Your help will be greatly appreciated!

To view avis you need the DivX codec - from divx.com suprisingly. I'd also download the VideoLan Client, its much better at playing divx than QuickTime.

downloading movies? that is not legal! you might as well buy them...
at least see em in theaters first!

Mr. K, it's called boarderline legal. Do you have any idea how many people engage in these sort of features? I see movies in theatres. I just saw Bruce Almighty. It's hot.

well yeah downloading movies is tempting if you have broadband :^) i just really hope that it never gets to be as big a deal as pirated music...
as for applications i have two for ya : MPlayer OSX (i don't have a link right now) or the above mentioned VLC (no link...) there is also a divx plugin for quicktime which is nice as it seems that quicktime is easier for my system to run then either of the third party applications.
i wans't really serious about downloading music - but don't let it keep you from the theater's :) movies are better when you go with your crew and see them in the theater.

Downloading feature films is illegal... if you're just talking about movies as in media files, then there's nothing illegal at all.

As for AVI's, whenever I try to open one Windows Media Player opens up. However, as Quicktime is optimized for and integrated into OS X, the DIVX plugin may be a better option.

You people speak as if the only AVI files are movies! Well, it's not true! There's also.... uh..... porn AVIs, and.... uh....... damn, guess that's it.

I thought the most Funny Movies were .avi. A substantial amount of the funny movies I have are .avi at least :)

So.. I downloaded all that MPlayer VideoLan Client stuff and I was able to play an avi file in internet explorer. I quit explorer, and now I can't play the file any more because my comp says quicktime doesn't understand it!!! I tried opening internet explorer again but it didn't work. I opened up Mplayer and Videolan and my DivX player and then tried playing the file, but that didn't work either. What is up with that? My computer is nuts.

mplayer is a nice program
vlc is another one
quicktime + those programs are enough to read those pirate videos you are about to download.

Dont bother with Mplayer or divx codec for QT they all suck, VideoLanClient (VLC) is your best option, it can handle video encoded in all formats of divx including xvid n 3vix it also can read vob files and .bin files

and remember, when you download illegal copies of movies your taking money away from poor starving actors and poor starving film industry CEO's :(

Best option for me running on G3 iMac 400MHz, is Quicktime.

Download DivX Codec:
http://www.divx.com

And get DivX Doctor II with the 3ivx codec from:
http://www.3ivx.com

One you have downloaded em all, shuv the DivX and 3ivX codecs in:
/Library/Quicktime

Drop your DivX .avi file on to DivX Doctor II and let it do its stuff.
You will be now left with a new .mov file. Run Quicktime and watch your movie :)
You can bin the .avi file now.

DivX Doctor does a great job at increasing the picture quality and decoding that MPEG Video. It's a god send.

Enjoy :)

Androo: For the sake of your soul and my sanity, please stop plugging that program! It seems the only thing you do on this board anymore is to gush how wonderful FSFX is. It's getting annoying, and it has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Basically, enough already!

bananaboi: Sounds like a typical Microsoft application(s). :)

Gonna wank the night away...
