.avi files on os x

does anyone have an idea how i can view .avi files on os x? or on a mac in general? i thought windows media player would do the job, but it doesn't ...
any suggestions?

If you download the (to the best of my knowledge) only divx codec for osx at

http://wolk.datashed.net/gems/mich/divosx.tgz

and place it in the quicktime folder in you main library (not in your home directory), divx movies will play like a dream. A bad one, but nevertheless...

Another tip is to download the 3ivx codec at

http://www.3ivx.com/codec/3ivx_D3.5_OSX.dmg.sit

This time, the dream will be dark and horrifying, but it is a cool, technology. Even smaller than divx. Installation instructions remain the same. Cheers
