.avi files -- setting a player

i googled and found out that you can play avi files with VLC
seems to work, except i have to go open each one with cmnd O

is there a way to set which application automatically opens when you click on a certain file type?
like: set VLC to be used every time i double-click on an avi file?
 
Command-I on one of the Files to see the Get Info window. Set to open with VLC, then click Change All.
 
And you can also drag files onto an application's icon in the dock to have the app open the file.
