what plays .avi movies? quicktime 6 & Windows media player 7 tell me the format is unreadable...is it just me?
 
i don't remember is this is a pro only feature but do you have the ability to import?

if not i would say WMP or Real Player

and if that fails then it's a mutent PC file
(in my opnion stick to Mpegs and .mov/.moov)
 
you lack the proper codec. avi files sometimes use exotic codecs (encoder/decoder), and without the codec you cannot view the file. with windows, i find that a lot of times you can go looking for codecs and install them, and then the movie will work. on the mac platform, most codecs are not released and you have no options.
 
It may be Divx, they'll often be AVI files. I'd start by downloading the Divx codec, and try it.
 
There are a few .avi's even VLC won't play, I've seen MPlayerOSX do the best job in supporting formats.

I had the exact same problem buddy (well i wanted to find a app that can play divx files). But the thing is I gaved up on searching for a app that can play .avi files and also search on codecs.

I"ve tried various DivX codecs, all of them were hopeless, even the codec http://www.divx.com or http://www.divxdigest.com offer is BS i thought. You have to convert the .avi into .mpg by using apps like "AVI2MPG". Then quicktime can play the file smooth as a silk :)

But yeah, if you find a way to play .avi files on OS X, tell me :D, I would love to know.
