Backing up iTunes - 2

Hi,
I posed a question last week re. backing up itunes (see http://www.macosx.com/help/qview.php?questionid=24844).
I got a response but I answered in the affirmative (ie. yes my db file and xml file are in the right place) ie user/music/itunes/ . . but when I open itunes now my library is blank and I can't access my music.

It's been a week now of an office without groovy tunes. Please help.

Can't find your last post you refer to, but try this. In iTunes, use File | Add to Libary and navigate to the folder where your mp3's and other music files are (typically under your music folder in your home directory). iTunes will reimport all the files, though your settings and playlists may need to be re-created

THanks for that, the only problem is that it's putting all my tunes back on to my laptop. The reason I took them off was because there wasn't enough room left. Is there any way I can have access to my tunes (on my hard drive) whilst keeping my laptop memory clear?
