Backing Up Mail

My hard drive crashed recently and I was able to put back everything on my MacBook's new hard drive as it was via Time Machine and my external hard drive - everything except Mail.

It put back my folders, but they were all empty - none of my emails were backed up - why is this and how can I ensure that Time Machine saves my emails when I back up? I have a Gmail account, so haven't lost my emails completely, but it's frustrating that they aren't filed as I had saved them and I will have to download them again.

Thanks,

Are you using IMAP? I ask because I can see my Time Machine saved email by first going to /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MailBoxes/ and getting past boxes that i saved to my Mac. I use POP email and save the email I want in the Mail pull down folder "On my Mac" and make certain folders to save to.

Were you doing the same?
