My HDD has some errors on it. I am running a 15" 1.25GHz G4 Powerbook with 2GB RAM. I do not think the errors represent actual hardware damage but obviously can't be sure, so I want to back up everything before I do anything major like an OS upgrade (OS updates are enough of a headache!).
My problem is that if I use almost any backup software, or even just the Finder, to copy all of the drive, or my Home folder, I get -36 errors and the copy stops. There seems to be no way to override the errors.
The only software that works is iBackup, but because I am backing up to a Lacie NAS drive formatted as EXT3 (which is impossible to reformat as HFS+) the file do not show up in the finder once backed up, even though they are there on the NAS drive (I can see them from Safari and even "download" them).
So, can anyone tell me how I might back up this disk please, either by ignoring -36 errors and copying what can be copied (probably 99% of it) or by some other means?
The other thing I want to do is defragment the disk using iDefrag before upgrading. Good idea? (Also want to backup before defragging).
Thanks for any tips.
Tony.
